What is Pay Per Click (PPC)?
Pay per click advertisements are usually text ads placed above and/or to the right of the natural search results; when a site visitor clicks on the advertisement, the advertiser is charged based on the position and cost of the targeted keyword(s). Advertisers bid an amount per keyword / position they want to appear in the paid for results and depending of the number of advertisers bidding for a targeted keyword can be very expensive.
Variants include pay for placement and pay for ranking. Pay per click is also sometimes known as Cost Per Click (CPC).
While many companies offer PPC advertisements, Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing, formerly Overture, are the largest PPC operators as of 2006. MSN have started beta testing their own PPC services, MSN adCenter. Depending on the search engine, minimum prices per click start at US $0.01 (up to US $0.50). Very popular search terms can cost much more on major commercial search engines. While PPC advertising can provide a high level of traffic to a website, it does not guarantee any sales, which can result in an expensive daily advertising campaign. Abuse of the PPC model is known as click fraud.
What is click fraud?
Click fraud occurs in PPC online advertising when a person, automated script or computer program imitates a legitimate user of a web browser clicking on an ad for the purpose of generating an improper charge per click. Advertising networks being a key beneficiary of the fraud are likely to spend little or no time in pursuing the perpetrators so any reliable click fraud defense has to be implemented on the advertiser's website.
So what does this mean? The major benefit of PPC advertising is an immediate listing on a given search engine except now you've got to implement click fraud software and monitor it to get the most out of your advertising budget.
What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
SEO is the optimization of a website so that it has a higher SERP placement. This can be accomplished by various methods including the reformatting of your HTML source code to be more search engine friendly. Optimizing your code is only the beginning of the journey to SERP nirvana (ranking #1 for your targeted keywords). The most important factor for placing highly in SERPs is to have a high number of quality backlinks to your site.
What is a SEO company?
A SEO company offers search engine optimization as a service, which often just involves minor modifications to your HTML source code (which can easily be done by you) and supplying your site with enough backlinks from their network to achieve the desired SERP. Most if not all SEO companies are expensive for what is effectively a backlink program.
What is Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?
SEM is basically an active and ongoing SEO strategy including other forms of advertising including, banner advertising, pay per click advertising, bulk email advertising and other forms of online marketing.
What is a Search Engine Marketing (SEM) company?
A SEM company is basically a SEO company on steroids. A SEM company will not only optimize a website for higher SERPs but will actively manage the ongoing marketing of a website, these services are very expensive.
Why do I need the services of an SEO / SEM company?
You don't – If a website has good title and keyword relevancy to page content and joins an effective link building program it is more than equal to paying a SEO/SEM company to do the same job, at a faction of the price.
What is PageRank?
PageRank is a patented method created by the founders of Google to assign a numerical weighting to each page within their index of the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" the page's relative importance within that index. The exact numerical weighting algorithm is unknown, however one of the major factors of the algorithm in calculating a page's relative importance is the number and quality of backlinks a page has.
What is the benefit of a high PageRank?
When a site has a high PageRank, it means that it is viewed as more relevant and will achieve a higher placement than other sites for a search query in the natural organic search engine results.
Whilst other major commercial search engines do not weight their pages based on PageRank, they use a similar algorithm. Any site with a high PageRank is likely to achieve high placements in all of the commercial search engines.

I've tried signing up - but I can't/won't install PHP on my webserver
Unfortunately at this time we only support PHP but we're looking at including other server side scripting languages. Use the contact support form and tell us what server side scripting languages you use and would like to see included in the Links 4 Links program.
I've looked at the technical guide and it looks complicated?
It really is as simple as:
- Install PHP if not already installed on your webserver, OR
- Ask your web server service provider to install PHP or upgrade to a package that includes PHP.
- Create a new HTML page on your site for your outgoing links.
- Copy and paste our small PHP script from the technical guide into your newly created HTML page where you want your outgoing links to appear.
- Then create a link from your homepage that is indexable and followable to the newly created page.
- Request your newly created page using your domain name and URI from a client browser.
- Once the page loads you're done.
If you're still having problems use our support form to contact us for further assistance.
I've tried this but it still isn't working?
Ensure that php.ini has the following option set:
allow_url_fopen = On
this is the default value in PHP. If you're still having problems use our support form to contact us for further assistance.
My "outgoing links" page is working, how soon will I receive my incoming one way backlinks?
Once we have checked and confirmed that the outgoing links page and the link to it from your homepage are indexable and followable, your site will then be activated on our system and you will start to receive your one way links / backlinks immediately (normally within 24 hours).
What sites will these links come from?
The sites that you will receive one way links / backlinks from are hard working honest sites like yours looking to build up link popularity and PageRank. We only accept websites that comply with sections 4.3 - 4.5 of our Terms and Conditions. Generally speaking sites of a sexual, criminal or otherwise undesirable nature will not be allowed to participate in our backlink building program.
Are these links considered link farms?
No - All of the members of our program are vetted to ensure that they are genuine sites or businesses. At Links 4 Links we value your PageRank as much as our own, we do not participate in link farming.
What is a link farm?
A link farm is group of sites created solely for the purpose of search engine ranking manipulation that consist almost entirely of a long list of interlinked unrelated pages, normally these pages aren't even real sites or businesses. These types of pages are penalized by almost all search engines and can even result in your site being banned from their listings.
What PageRank are the sites that will be linking to me?
The PageRank of the sites you will receive links from can vary. It is all dependant on the active members that are participating in the Links 4 Links program. As more members join the average PageRank will increase.
Even if a site with a low PageRank joins, the PageRank updates will recognize the links acquired through our service and that site's PageRank will usually increase within one update.
How many links will I receive?
Again it is all dependant on the number of active members of the Links 4 Links program. Once you are a member, as more sites join our program you will receive additional links and at no extra cost whilst your subscription to our program is active.
I've heard it's important to have my inbound links on relevant sites/pages, how do you address this?
While the search engines have started to weight relevant links more highly, the truth is that it doesn't take a lot of text on a page to deem a page relevant. At Links 4 Links we provide enough space in the link anchor and link description text that if properly utilized with enough keyword rich information, it will satisfy the relevancy requirement. This means that when you join the Links 4 Links program you can be sure that not only are you getting quality backlinks, all of which are one way links, but you are also getting relevant one way links.
Companies or link building programs that claim to provide links from only the same industry or market segment as your site are probably fabricating the truth. In all likelyhood only a small number of related sites will exist in each catergory which equates to a small number of relevant links to your site, and yet these companies claim to provide a high number of links. This is more likely to be a somewhat dishonest sales pitch.
I've heard gaining a high number of links over a short period of time is bad for my PageRank?
This is true, links are supposed to be acumulated naturally. Good content on a site will attract links in a natural manner over a realistic time period. Joining a link program and gaining a high number of links overnight is not natural and could signal link spam activity to the search engines.
This is why at Links 4 Links, not only do we offer (up to 5) variants of your anchor link text which will be randomly selected for your incoming links, you also have the option to automatically stagger your incoming links. By having varied anchor text it means that all of your incoming links will not be identical giving them a more natural appearance. Should you choose to stagger (highly recommended) your new one way links, they will be provided over a four month period, this will make it appear more natural to the search engines.
How long do I have these links for?
You will enjoy the benefit of these links for as long as you are part of our one way linking program.
How long am I committed to the program?
You may cancel our service at any time, but any subscription fee is unfortunately non-refundable.
Does the service help me target specific keywords/phrases?
Yes - At Links 4 Links we provide enough space in the link anchor text that if properly utilized can be used to target anywhere from 1 individual keyword up to 1024 characters which is roughly 100 words.. Keywords or phrases that are included in the anchor text, i.e. the clickable area of a link are a major influence in keyword targeting.
How do I change my information once I've signed up?
You can change your keywords, description, and other information by logging into your account, however we do not recommend that you change you anchor text too frequently.
How can I verify these links?
You can check these links a couple of ways. First, sign in to your profile and check the sites linking to my domain section.
The other way to check the links is via the search engines themselves. One thing to keep in mind is the top three search engines will recognize new links at varying speeds and quantities. MSN, for example, will recognize the majority of the links you receive through our service within as little as 20 days. Google, on the other hand, takes 2-3 months to recognize inbound links to your site, and may not register as many.

The pages that our links are found on are dynamically created by your system, will this affect my site?
It is well known now that dynamic pages are counted just the same by the major search engines, as long as there are less than 3 querystring variables. Our system only uses 1 querystring variable.
What is the Google Sandbox, does it affect me?
Firstly its important to point out that to date nobody (outside of Google) has conclusive proof that Google's Sandbox exists. What has been documented is how much longer a new site or site that suddenly gets a large increase in inbound links take to rank well in Google's SERP. This is because Google is now applying a dampening/ageing filter so that any site in it's sandbox will not rank highly regardless of content or number of links.
Can I remove my site from Google's sandbox?
YES – all it takes is patience, sorry to break it to you but it is as simple as that. Depending on the competition for the keywords you are targeting it can take as long as 6-8 months, but normally between 3-6 months to be removed from the sandbox. In the mean time though put the time to good use, build good keyword rich content such as writing articles, concentrate on the other search engines, increase your inbound links (the Links 4 Links program is a great way to achieve this) and generally market your site through other channels. As an absolute last resort you could consider Google's AdWords, but beware it can work out exceptionally expensive, for popular keywords expect a daily AdWord spend of $200+.
